TEACHING WRITING
o
Teaching writing can be one of the most
difficult aspect both in Teaching English as Second Language (TESL) and
Teaching English as Foreign Language (TEFL). Writing needs not only rich
vocabulary but also excellent grammar.
o
The problems in teaching writing
1.
Grammatical writing problems. Recognize
and fix gramatical errors.
2.
Stylistic writing problems. Make your
writin clear and effective.
3.
Word-use writing problems. Cut down on
confusing jargon, and stop using the wrong words.
4.
Punctuation problems. Learn how to use
puntuation correctly.
o
Strategies for teaching writing
1. Overall game plane
§ Choose
writing object
§ Find
a writing exercise that helps to focus on the specific objective
§ If
possible, tie the subject matter to student needs
§ Provide
feedback through correction activities that call on students to correct their
own mistakes
§ Have
students revise work
2. Choose your target well
Choosing the
target area depends on many factors;
§ What
level are the students?
§ What
is the average age of the students?
§ Why
are the students learning English?
§ What
should the students be able to produce at the end of this exercise? (a well
written letter, basic communication of ideas, etc).
§ What
is the focus of the exercise? (structure, tense usage, creative writing, etc).
3.
Remember
§ What
will students be able to do after exercise?
§ Keep
focus to one area of English writin skills
4. Keeping students involved
The
teacher can begin to consider how to involve the students by considering what
type of activities are interesting to the studens?, will they need any of
skills grammatically? Agood way to approach this is by class feedback, or
brainstorming sessions.
5. Correction
The
question of which type of correction will facilitate a useful writing exercise
is of utmost importance. Most importantly, by choosing the correct means of
correction the teacher can encourage rather discourage students.
