Problem
in Teaching Reading
Reading is a process of
receiving and interpreting information. It is an activity which involves the
reader and the reading materials in building meaning.
The important thing of
teaching reading is trying to know what the student’s learning styles are.
These are the students’ learning styles:
1.
Auditory Learners
Students
with this style will be able to recall what they hear and will prefer oral
instructions. They learn by listening and speaking. These students enjoy
talking, interviewing, debating, participating on a panel, and or giving oral
reports.
2.
Visual Learners
Students
with this style will be able to recall what they see prefer written
instructions. These students are sight readers who enjoy reading silently.
These students enjoy working such as, maps, graphs, charts, cartoons, posters,
text with a lot of pictures, and or computer graphics.
3.
Kinesthetic Learners
Students
with this style can learn by touching or manipulating objects. They need to
involve their whole body in learning. They remember material best if they act
it out. These students enjoy playing games, making models, setting up
experiments, etc.
Reading material is
something that you must remember carefully. Succesful selection of materials
maybe a key to enhancing student’s reading ability. In the following sections,
there are several reading materials. They are:
1)
Text books
2)
Science books for children
3)
The internet
In this part we are
talking about approaches in teaching reading. They are:
1)
Reading The Text
Reading
aloud is sometime needed for the teachers in order to practice, so that they
know the story well and can relax and concentrate on reading expressively.
Reading aloud is appropriate for all students, including those who already read
accurately and fluently. Reading to children is an approach that can be use
strategically in order to:
o
promoting a love of reading
o
developing vocabulary and a knowledge of
books and text forms
o
engaging children in conversation about
texts
o
encouraging children to respond
imagintively to a variety of texts
o
promoting oral language development
2)
The Programmed
Questions
can be effective, because they:
o
give students a purpose for reading
o
help students to think actively as they
read
o
focus students’s attention on waht they
are to learn
o
encourage students to monitor their
comprehension
o
help students to review content and
relate what they have learned to what they already know
3)
The Individualized Approach
The
materials must be from students’s choice, because students’s interest is most
important.
4)
Supporting Students’ Responses
Effective
teachers enable their students to savour the experience, share their
enthuasiasm, and reflect on new words, expressions, or ideas. It involves other
communicative skill.
