TEACHING LISTENING
1.      Definition
Listening is the ability to identify and understand what others are saying.
2.      Factors that affect the listening process :
o   The listener
Interest in a topic increase the listener’s comprehension.
o   The speakers
A speaker’s rate of delivery may be too fast, too slow, or have too many hesitation for a listener to follow.
o   Content
Content that is familiar is easier to comprehend than content with unfamiliar vocabulary.
o   Visual support
Visual support such as video, pictures, diagrams, gestures, facial expression, can increase comprehension if the learner is able to correctly interprete it.
3.      Why some students find listening difficulties :
o   They are trying to understand every word
o   They get left behind trying to work out what a previous word meant
o   They just do not know the most important words
o   They do not recognise the words that they know
o   They have problem with different accents
o   They lack listening stamina/ they get tired
o   They have mental block
o   They are distracted by background noise
o   They cannot cope with not having images
o   They have hearing problems
o   They cannot tell the differences between the different voices
4.      Principles for good listening :
o   Pay attention for the speaker says
o   Practice active listening
o   Pay attention to the  structure
o   Listen for key words
(by using CONTRASTING and
PARALELISM between hypername and hyponame)
o   Key phrases or markers
5.      ADDITIONAL from Mr. Jihat
The reasons why the students find difficulties in listening:
§  Not all the students can master the topic well
§  The students cannot distinguish the similar sounds (minimal pairs)
§  The students have not yet master Englisg grammar
§  The teacher’s pronunciation is difficult to be understood
