The Traditional Ceremony of Nyadar

The Traditional Ceremony of Nyadar

Saronggi, one of sub-district in Sumenep regency, has so many unique traditions and arts such as Karapan Sapi, Petik Laut, Saronen, Ludruk, and many more. One of the most interesting tradition is Nyadar. It is located in Kebun Dadap Barat village, Saronggi sub-district.  This traditional ceremony is held three times each year between July and September. The first Nyadar is usually celebrated on July when the salt maker start processing their dam until become salt. For next celebration, the second Nyadar, celebrated on August when the salt maker start cropping their salt. And the last is held on September when they take and pick the salt into their own house.  Nyadar is held by both Pinggir Papas society and Kebun Dadap society. Basically, the point of this ceremony is nyekar. Nyekar is an activity of visiting the ancestors cemetries.

The main purpose of this unique ceremony is to get God blessing. Another is as a thankfulness because God already have helped and permitted Pinggir Papas society in making and cropping salt. The last purpose is to respect and memorize Prince Anggasuto who gave them ways and technique of making salt. That is why producing salt is a daily routine of  Pingir Papas society. Talking about Prince Anggasuto, a man called a hero in history of Sumenep. How come? Long time ago there was a war between Sumenep Kingdom and Bali Kingdom. In the end, Sumenep was the winner at the time. There are so many Bali soldiers who got great pressure in Sumenep and they couldn’t went to their home town easily. Here, Prince Anggasuto shows his wise. He asked to The King of Sumenep at the time that a number of Bali soldiers would be in his hand and everything wich have relation with them would be his obligation. The king of Sumenep dealt with that request. Shortly, Prince Anggasuto picked the soldiers to Pinggir Papas village and they began the pioneer of the village itself.

Nyadar is really identical with any ritual done in it. There are so many procession in the first until third nyadar. The first Nyadar is celebrated at 2 pm. It is usually started by sowing certain flowers called bhabur by the prominent custom wearing black robe in their ancestors cemetries. Black means quiteness, death, and sadness. It is also continued by prominent custom wearing white robe by praying. White symbolizes the pureness. After that all of the participants of that ceremony enter to the cemetries and start praying.

Basically, the second celebration of Nyadar almost similar with te first Nyadar. The different thing is only the time when it is celebrated like what we have explained above.

The last celebration, the third ceremony of Nyadar. The participants of it are also called this part as Nyadar Bengko. Bengko means a house. So, special for the third Nyadar which is only celebrated in the ex of Prince Anggasuto house. It is held on September. Its procession start by praying to the God and continued by reading the old manuscripts named Jati Swara and Sampurna Sembah. The prominent custom only reads the certain parts, which heve relation with the moeslem theory, of those manuscript. How can it be? Because most of the participants is moeslem. And in the long run, they can get the point and apply ot into their daily life. The most interesting thing in the third ceremony of Nyadar is the poeple who send up any pray wearing a special shirt named Racok Saebu. Racok Saebu means a shirt which has so many colors in it. There are red, black, soft yellow, red polkadot, and brown. Red symbolize the sun which always aglows and accompany us. Black means the rainy season, and soft yellow for the dry season. The red polkadot means  the transition period from dry season to rainy season or the contrary. The last, brown, symbolize the land. Racok Saebu is usually weared with Blankon and Sarung.
