LABANG
MESEM
Known as gate of Sumenep’s Royal Palace,
located around Taman Sare. In Indonesia, Labang=gate, Mesem=smiling. There are
so many versions of Labang Mesem history, but the point of them is the name of
Labang Mesem is a symbol of the Kings’ and others’ hospitality whom always give
warm welcome to the guests coming.
Moreover, there are three versions which
talk about the history of the name Labang Mesem. First, long time ago the gate
of Sumenep’s Royal Palace guarded by two dwarfs. It could be seen from the two
rooms with short doors in the left and right side of the gate. Today, we also
can find the graves of the dwarfs in Asta Tinggi (Sumenep’s Royal Cemetry).
Poeple who across that gate usually smile, because that gate guarded by the
cute dwarfs.
Second, there is an open space located
on top of that gate used for the kings’ spot to control around the palace.
Another function is to control their wives and princesses who were taking a
bath in Taman Sare (a park with a bath pool used as bath place located in the
complex of Sumenep’s Royal Palace). Perhaps when the king was looking at his
princesses and or wives, he seemed happy and smiled. So that, this gate named
Labang Mesem.
The last version stated that one day
Sumenep kingdom was successfully defeated Bali Kingdom. Because of grudge, the
king of Bali would like to revenge. They were coming to Sumenep, but when they
arrived in front of the gate of Sumenep palace with their great grudge,
suddenly changed into a meaningful smile with desire of friendship. Wonder it
was caused by the king’s wish to the almighty God which came true. Changing the
grudge as friendship in a wonderful way.
Hopefully, you can get nice experience
in visiting my home town, Sumenep, and enjoy your vacation in a number of
beautiful spots. Thanks J
